Data-driven decision making

2022

TL; DR

How to explain to the business what your information team do, how you can help them, and how to figure out what their requirements really are before you add projects to your BI backlog.

Session Details

Your pointy-haired bosses need insights to help them make decisions. You need good quality data to turn into information to provide those insights. Where does that data come from? How can anyone know if the decisions they make lead to the outcomes they wanted? How can you bring IT and business teams together to figure out the best solutions? The “data cycle” is a way of thinking about how these things feed one another, to help you to articulate to managers how your BI or data analysis team can help them grow, improve, or revolutionise the organisation you work for. While this particular model is my own invention, I don’t claim it is entirely original - it is just my way of explaining things to my clients and employers that has served me well over the last decade or so (and been refined a few times along the way). This session is platform agnostic and needs no prior knowledge. The intent is to help you in conversations about how information flows through your business in the service of data-driven decisions. You might also find that turning the data cycle on its head helps you become better at gathering requirements and delivering more value in your BI projects.
