Tech's Secret Sauce: The Power of NeurodiversitySQLBits 2026

Neurodiversity is often described through a long list of labels—ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, and more—which can feel overwhelming or impersonal. Many people don’t realise they may be neurodiverse, and others may feel uncertain or uncomfortable sharing this part of themselves. Fortunately, more technology companies are recognising that neurodiverse colleagues bring exceptional strengths, creativity, focus, and problem‑solving abilities that enrich teams and workplaces. In this session, two neurodiverse members of the data community join a mental health professional for an open, honest conversation about what neurodiversity really looks like. They’ll share the personal “oh, that explains it!” moments that helped them understand their own brains better, offer real-world coping strategies that help them navigate daily life, and provide practical tips for collaborating with and supporting neurodiverse coworkers. The message at the heart of the session is simple: different ways of thinking aren’t flaws—they’re powerful, valuable perspectives that make teams stronger and life far more interesting. Everyone brings their own spice to the table, and those differences are what create the best flavours. If you’re exploring your own neurodiversity, this session aims to help you feel understood, confident, and less alone. If you work with neurodiverse individuals, you’ll gain insight, empathy, and useful approaches to help everyone thrive. Above all, it’s a reminder that you are capable, talented, and absolutely have this.

Then you have to interact with people—colleagues or clients—and things do not always go to plan. Learning these soft skills is essential for success. The good news is that these skills can also be learned. Join me in this highly interactive session, where I share hard-won techniques I use daily. I will share the methods and ideas I have used to succeed in my career. These strategies are easy to learn and can be used as soon as you leave. This is not a typical session; it is told with simple stories and practical techniques you can learn even in this short session. You will leave not only with suggestions but also a toolkit of practical techniques and insights into working with people. It will provide the tools to deal more successfully with others, making you feel more prepared and confident in your interactions.

Why Am I Here? Dealing with Imposter PhenomenonSQLBits 2026

Many people question their abilities, attributing success to luck rather than skill. This is known as the Imposter Phenomenon, an experience shared by an estimated 70% of the population. Common symptoms include: Discounting Achievements: Minimizing successes while focusing heavily on mistakes. Feelings of Inadequacy: Feeling like you don’t belong or that others are more qualified. Fear of Exposure: Avoiding new challenges for fear of being revealed as a "fraud." Persistent Anxiety: Constant worry regarding professional or personal endeavors. This session offers a personal perspective from someone who deals with these feelings daily. Rather than promising "magic cures," the discussion focuses on shared experiences, practical strategies, and hard-won techniques used to navigate these emotions. By attending, you will realize you are not alone in these struggles. You will leave with fresh insights, new ideas, and a different way of looking at your own accomplishments and potential.
